What Research Reveals About Diet Drinks and Cardiovascular Health

At All Deep Massage & Wellness, we believe that complete well-being comes from understanding how everyday choices affect our health. Today, we’re exploring important research about diet beverages and their potential impact on cardiovascular health.

The Concerning Research Findings

A comprehensive study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association has revealed troubling connections between artificially sweetened beverages and serious health risks. The research followed more than 80,000 postmenopausal women for nearly 12 years, finding that consuming two or more artificially sweetened drinks daily was linked to a 31% higher risk of clot-based strokes, 29% increased risk of heart disease, and 16% higher risk of early death compared to women who rarely consumed these drinks.

Who’s Most at Risk?

The study identified particular groups with elevated risks:

  • Women with no previous history of heart disease or diabetes who were obese were twice as likely to experience a clot-based stroke
  • African-American women without previous heart disease or diabetes had approximately four times higher risk of clot-based stroke
  • White women showed different patterns, with 1.3 times higher likelihood of coronary heart disease

Particularly concerning was the finding that small-artery occlusion, a common type of stroke caused by blockage of the smallest arteries in the brain, was nearly 2½ times more common in women who consumed diet drinks heavily, regardless of race or weight.

Understanding the Connection

While researchers emphasize that these studies show association rather than direct causation, health professionals are taking notice of these consistent findings.

“This is another confirmatory study showing a relationship between artificially sweetened beverages and vascular risks. While we cannot show causation, this is a yellow flag to pay attention to these findings,” noted Dr. Ralph Sacco, President of the American Academy of Neurology.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, raises important questions: “What is it about these diet drinks? Is it something about the sweeteners? Are they doing something to our gut health and metabolism? These are questions we need answered.”

Healthier Hydration Alternatives

Based on these findings, consider these healthier beverage options:

  • Water – the ultimate hydration source
  • Unsweetened herbal teas
  • Infused water with fresh fruits, vegetables, or herbs
  • Occasional small portions of 100% fruit juice
